About this material

Duranova® – A Plastic-Free, 3D-Formable Material from Functionalised Wood Fibres

Duranova® is a durable, 3D-formable material made from functionalised wood fibres. Developed by Fiberdom, the material is produced using a patented fibre-functionalisation technology that enhances the performance of natural fibres using a limited number of natural ingredients, without synthetic binders, plastic coatings, or fossil-based additives.

Many fibre-based materials rely on synthetic components or layered structures to achieve strength, durability, or moisture resistance. While effective, these additions can complicate recycling, prevent true compostability, and introduce hidden plastic content. Fiberdom’s approach improves the functionality of wood fibres while preserving a mono-material fibre structure, allowing Duranova® products to remain compatible with existing paper recycling streams and home composting systems.

The result is a high-performance fibre material that can be shaped into complex geometries while maintaining strength, lightweight structures, and material efficiency. As functionality is introduced during production rather than through coatings or downstream treatments, Duranova® avoids additional processing steps and enables simpler product structures.

Duranova® is already commercially used in certified home-compostable cutlery available through major Finnish retail and food-service channels. In addition to these initial applications, the material is being evaluated for a broader range of uses where durable, plastic-free alternatives are required.

Fiberdom has carried out extensive industrial validation to ensure the material can be produced and processed within existing manufacturing systems. Trials across the fibre value chain—including paper production environments, continuous reel-to-reel processing, and advanced fibre-forming technologies—have demonstrated stable production behaviour and compatibility with scalable industrial processes.

A key design principle behind Duranova® is material efficiency. By improving the formability and durability of fibre structures, the material enables lightweight designs that reduce raw material use while maintaining performance. This “more with less” approach supports the economic viability of fibre-based products in applications traditionally dominated by plastics.

Responsibility and transparency are central to the material’s development. Duranova® products are made from FSC-certified fibre, meet ISO 22000 food safety standards, and are certified for home compostability. Fiberdom has also completed third-party verified company and product carbon footprint baselines to support reliable lifecycle assessment as the material scales.

Together, these characteristics position Duranova® as a new generation of fibre-based material, combining performance, scalability, and manufacturing compatibility in applications traditionally dominated by plastics, while remaining aligned with existing circular material systems. As the technology continues to develop, Fiberdom is exploring new product formats and industrial partnerships to expand the role of high-performance fibre materials across multiple sectors.
