About this material

Self-supporting 19 mm solid surface sheet made from 100% recycled polycarbonate, with a subtle translucency.

Karlite is a solid surface by Delft-based Plasticiet, made entirely from recycled polycarbonate. At 19 mm thick it is strong enough to stand on its own, without a backing board or substrate.

The sheets have a cloudy, stone-like depth and a slight translucency. Seven standard colours are available: Chalk, Quartz, Glacial, Jade, Sienna, Pomegranate and Chestnut. Chalk glows softly when lit from behind, which suits lighting and table tops.

Plasticiet also develops custom colours and levels of translucency from a RAL or Pantone reference, through rounds of samples. For bespoke orders, the material can be made from a client’s own clean waste stream.

A sheet measures 1060 x 1060 mm and weighs about 27 kg. It can be cut, milled and chamfered. According to the maker, Karlite is heat stable, UV-resistant, suitable for wet areas and highly fire-resistant, and it can be recycled again. That makes it an option for furniture, bathroom surfaces and wall elements.
