Re-Yut-Cel – Felt from Recycled Coffee Sacks

About this material

Re-Yut-Cel is a collaborative material initiative that transforms discarded jute coffee sacks into a durable, biobased felt for interior and design applications. The project, originally launched under the name Coffeebag Re-Imagined, brings together Clean & Unique, BYBO Coffee, i-did, and designer Sylvia Calvo BCN to develop a circular solution for single-use textile waste.

Jute coffee sacks, typically used once for transporting coffee beans, are commonly incinerated after use. In response, the partners established a local value chain in which BYBO collects the used sacks and i-did processes them into a dense, tactile felt material. The resulting product is designed for both functional and aesthetic applications.

The felt is suitable for acoustic panels, lampshades, mattress fillings, and other interior elements. It can also replace disposable paper-based items such as coasters, placemats, and hotel door hangers. The material combines structural strength with sound-absorbing qualities, positioning it within the acoustic and biobased materials segment.

Designer Sylvia Calvo BCN contributed to refining the material’s visual and tactile qualities, aligning sustainability objectives with interior design requirements. Following presentations at industry events including Circular Textile Days (Den Bosch), Texworld (Paris), and Green Week (Brussels), the project has received interest from interior brands and hospitality companies.

Operating under the name Re-Yut-Cel, the partners continue to develop the material and scale production, aiming to establish a cross-sector circular chain connecting the coffee industry with textile and interior applications.
