A tumbler made of waste wood thermoplastic

Kim Jiwoo, a student at design academy Designerdot in South Korea, designed a tumbler made of a thermoplastic derived from wood waste.

The material the tumbler is made of is CXP, made by the eponymous South Korean company. The name stands for Cellulose Cross-linked Polymer, a polymer made by self-bonding cellulose. Cellulose is one of the main ingredients of wood. To make CXP, PEFC certified wood waste is turned into a thermoplastic. The pellets can be used in common plastic injection. In addition, the material is said to be biodegradable at end-of-life, like wood.

Called Link, the design of the tumbler is also inspired by trees. The handle was inspired by the ability of different trees to fuse together to form a tree, while the ribbed main body resembles a tree trunk. The tumbler is leak-proof thanks to a rim of silicone on the lid.
