Biobased Street Lighting Trial Launches in Nieuwegein

The municipality of Nieuwegein has started a large-scale trial of biobased street lighting in the historic district of Vreeswijk. The project is one of the first in the Netherlands to combine plant-based luminaires with energy-efficient LED technology on this scale.

The trial began in June 2026 with the installation of 60 new street lighting luminaires. A luminaire is the housing that contains and protects the lighting components mounted on a streetlight. The municipality plans to test a total of 300 biobased luminaires across different locations.

Biobased Materials Lower Environmental Impact

The new luminaires use plant-derived materials instead of conventional fossil-based alternatives. This choice helps reduce the environmental impact of public infrastructure and supports the use of renewable resources.

The material also removes the need for an additional paint coating. As a result, manufacturers can reduce emissions during production. The project shows how material selection can lower embodied carbon while simplifying the manufacturing process.

Each luminaire contains an energy-efficient LED light source. Together, the biobased housing and LED technology reduce both material-related and operational environmental impacts.

Testing Performance in Public Spaces

Nieuwegein will monitor how the luminaires perform in everyday conditions. The municipality will assess their durability, functionality and suitability for long-term outdoor use. The results will help determine whether the system can support more sustainable public spaces.

According to the municipality, this is the first Dutch project to deploy this combination of biobased luminaires and LED lighting on such a large scale. If the trial proves successful, Nieuwegein plans to introduce the lighting system in other parts of the municipality.

The pilot highlights the growing role of renewable materials in urban infrastructure. It also shows how municipalities can combine material innovation with energy-efficient technologies. For architects, landscape architects and product designers, the project offers a practical example of how biobased materials can replace conventional alternatives without compromising performance.
