Denim Waste Material System Wins ICONIC Award

Maastricht-based DenimX has won a Best of Best title at the ICONIC AWARDS 2026. The award recognises Material Matters, a system that transforms post-consumer denim into new design materials. These materials suit architecture, interiors and product design. The project received the highest title in the Product – Innovative Material category.

From Textile Waste To Design Material

Material Matters combines recycled textile fibres with biobased binders. As a result, discarded denim gains a new purpose. DenimX developed an adaptable system instead of focusing on one fixed product. Therefore, manufacturers can use the material in different processes and applications.

The finished surfaces retain the fibrous texture of the recycled denim. This gives them a distinct look and tactile quality. Moreover, the visible fibres reveal the origin of the raw material. DenimX combines this character with practical performance and the option for large-scale production.

Surfaces, Panels And Furniture

The system currently includes three applications. DenimX Eco HPL offers a surface material for architecture and interiors. Meanwhile, SAM Panel Denim Pure provides a panel with structural qualities. The Concord Chair also shows how designers can use the material for furniture and sculptural objects.

Across these applications, DenimX pays close attention to proportion, texture and surface finish. In addition, the company considers repair, disassembly and circular material flows from the start. This approach can help extend product lifespans. It may also support the recovery of materials after use.

DenimX works closely with production partners during material development. This allows the team to test the manufacturing limits of recycled and bio-based resources. According to founder Marc Meijers, Material Matters aims to balance appearance, performance and circularity. The project shows that circular materials can also support high-quality industrial design.

Furthermore, DenimX works with several local partners in Limburg. These partnerships contribute to the region’s growing network for material innovation.

Recognition For Material Innovation

The German Design Council, also known as Rat für Formgebung, organises the ICONIC AWARDS. The awards highlight new work in architecture, interiors and product innovation. Each category has only one or two Best of Best winners.

Ultimately, Material Matters presents post-consumer denim as a useful design resource. Its range of surfaces, panels and furniture applications shows the wider potential of recycled textiles in circular design.
