Industrial Concrete By-Products Reimagined As Interior Design

Lithuanian initiative OFF___RAW is demonstrating how industrial waste can gain a second life through design. The project works with local factories to identify defective construction components and repurpose them into interior objects without energy-intensive recycling processes.

Repurposing Defective Concrete Elements

One of the studio’s key collaborations is with Kauno Gelžbetonis, a Lithuanian producer of precast concrete components including wall slabs, floor panels and concrete well elements. During production, damaged or imperfect pieces are regularly generated and are usually treated as waste.

Instead of sending these components for disposal or downcycling, OFF___RAW preserves their original form and structural properties. The concrete elements are reused directly as tables, seating pieces and interior features. This avoids crushing, grinding or melting the material, processes that normally require large amounts of energy.

According to the studio, reusing the components in their existing state also helps preserve the embodied carbon already stored within the concrete. By intercepting the material before it enters the waste chain, the project reduces transportation, processing and additional emissions.

Imperfection As A Design Feature

OFF___RAW embraces the accidental nature of industrial defects. Each concrete segment carries unique marks, textures and irregularities created during production. The studio enhances these imperfections with graffiti-inspired artwork and urban visual references, turning discarded material into one-of-a-kind design pieces.

The project positions imperfection as an alternative to mass-produced uniformity. Rather than hiding flaws, OFF___RAW uses them to create character and authenticity within interior spaces.

Creating Circular Urban Spaces

The studio also integrates its repurposed objects into public and commercial environments. In one example, OFF___RAW created a café interior using concrete by-products sourced from the same city. The project demonstrates how local industrial waste can contribute to distinctive urban identities while remaining within a circular system.

Visitors interact directly with the reused materials, encouraging conversations around waste, reuse and circular design. OFF___RAW describes this approach as a complete ecosystem in which existing forms generate new functions and social value.

Design As A Tool For Revealing Value

Rather than inventing new materials, OFF___RAW focuses on changing how existing resources are perceived. The studio argues that design can reveal hidden value in industrial by-products while helping organisations rethink waste streams and material efficiency.

As the construction industry searches for lower-carbon and more circular solutions, projects such as OFF___RAW highlight the potential of direct reuse. By transforming defective concrete elements into desirable interior objects, the initiative offers an alternative model for reducing waste while creating new aesthetic and economic value.
