Recycled Paper Profiles As A Circular Alternative To Steel In Drywall Systems

News · Story by MaterialDistrict · 18 Mar 2026 · 2 min read

Steel studs form the structural framework of most gypsum partition walls. However, new material developments show that biobased alternatives can replace these metal components. SORIWA, a German manufacturer of drywall solutions, has developed a profile system made from recycled cellulose fibres as an alternative to conventional steel studs.

The SORIWA Multi Profile system uses multi-layer fibre profiles produced from recycled paper fibres. This material requires less energy to manufacture than steel and stores carbon during its lifecycle. As a result, the cellulose profiles can reduce the embodied carbon of interior partition systems.

Lower Carbon Impact In Partition Wall Construction

Compared with conventional steel studs, cellulose-based profiles can significantly reduce emissions. Available data indicates a reduction of approximately 2 kg of CO₂ per linear metre of profile. For a partition wall of around 100 m², this can result in a reduction of roughly 460 kg of CO₂ compared with steel framing.

In addition, cellulose is a renewable and recyclable material. These properties make it an attractive option for designers who want to lower the environmental footprint of interior construction.

System Compatible With Standard Drywall Construction

The SORIWA profiles integrate into conventional drywall systems. Installers can therefore use familiar installation techniques and standard plasterboard screws. The system uses a multi-profile concept that reduces the number of components required. A single profile can function as a C-profile in a stud wall. With the addition of a connector, it can also replace a UW-profile. When combined with a reinforcing core, it can substitute UA-profiles used for higher loads. This flexible design simplifies logistics and can reduce material waste during installation.

Certified Performance For Fire And Acoustics

The cellulose profiles carry German building approval and the Ü certification mark, allowing them to be used in regulated construction projects. Tests confirm compliance with structural, acoustic and fire performance requirements.

Partition walls constructed with the system can achieve fire resistance up to EI60. In addition, acoustic insulation values of around 52 dB (Rw) are reported. These performance levels allow the profiles to be used in a wide range of interior building applications.

Towards More Circular Drywall Construction

Interior fit-out systems rely heavily on steel components. Replacing these elements with cellulose alternatives can help reduce the material footprint of interior construction.

Material innovations such as the SORIWA cellulose profile system demonstrate how even relatively small building components can support circular design strategies. For architects and interior designers, such developments offer new opportunities to reduce embodied carbon while maintaining familiar construction methods.
