Scientists create lightest material on Earth

Scientists at UC Irvine, HRL Laboratories and Caltech claim to have made the lightest material on Earth. The new material is so lightweight it can be placed atop a dandelion without crushing the little seeds.

The material that the research team created has been dubbed ‘ultralight metallic microlattice’. Thanks tot its microlattice cellular construction, it consists of 99.99% air, the scientists claim. The lattice consists of interconnected hollow tubes with a wall thickness 1,000 times thinner than a human hair.
