Tyyne Acoustic Screen Combines Wood Weaving With Recycled Materials
Finnish interior architecture studio Sistem and circular economy company Niimaar have developed Tyyne, an acoustic space divider inspired by traditional wood weaving. The design combines recycled oak with wood-fibre acoustic panels. It provides sound absorption and privacy for offices, hospitality spaces and homes.
A Modern Take On Finnish Wood Weaving
Wood weaving ranks among Finland’s oldest craft traditions. Craftspeople folded, plaited and interlaced narrow strips of wood, especially birch bark. With this material-efficient technique, they created strong items without seams. These included shoes, baskets, backpacks and household objects.
Families and local communities passed down the craft over many generations. As a result, different regions developed their own techniques and patterns. Wood weaving later influenced Finnish modern design and inspired many designers and artists.
Tyyne translates this traditional method into a contemporary interior product. Craftspeople in Salo, on Finland’s west coast, weave narrow oak strips into a geometric surface by hand. The Finnish female name Tyyne also means ‘quiet’ or ‘calm’. This meaning reflects the screen’s role in creating peaceful spaces.
Sistem interior architect Daniela Weintraub notes that space dividers have shaped homes, workplaces and social settings throughout history. For Tyyne, the design team combined this familiar function with strong acoustic performance.
Recycled Oak From Luxury Yachts
The woven structure uses oak left over from interiors made for Swan luxury sailing yachts. Yacht interiors require durable, high-quality materials. Their production also creates narrow offcuts that still retain useful functional and visual qualities.
Niimaar partner and circular economy specialist Enni Karikoski saw weaving as an efficient way to reuse these remnants. The method turns small strips into a larger and durable surface. It also reduces material waste while giving the oak a new purpose.
Finnish manufacturer Aisti supplies the sound-absorbing panels inside the screen. The company makes them from Finnish wood fibre. Together, the woven outer layer and acoustic core give Tyyne Class A sound absorption.
Recycled materials account for a large share of the product. Finnish companies also carry out every stage of production within the country. This local approach keeps material sourcing, manufacturing and assembly relatively close together.
Flexible Applications And Variations
Tyyne can create quieter zones, visual privacy and spatial definition without permanent walls. Designers can use it in flexible workplaces, hotels, restaurants and residential interiors.
Niimaar also offers a birch version and an option without acoustic filling. Customers can request custom sizes and configurations for specific projects.
Niimaar and Sistem developed Tyyne together and introduced it at the Habitare furniture and design fair in Helsinki.
