What Not to Miss at Dutch Design Week 2024: Circular Furniture and Sustainable Design
Dutch Design Week 2024 takes place from 19 to 27 October in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Here, we present some of the most innovative material projects present. Today, we focus on circular furniture and sustainable design, with special attention to ceramics.
Dutch Design Week 2024 offers a deep dive into sustainable furniture design, where recycling, upcycling, and material innovation take centre stage. The project Better Place Furniture Return encourages to express gratitude for used furniture and create a ceremonial return of the waste to nature. It consists of a kit that includes a biomaterial body bag, liquid mushroom culture, a burial manual, and comes in a biodegradable box. Taking a different approach, Wastebar x Cooloo introduces a creative collaboration that focuses on turning industrial waste into furniture and décor. Tronco Coffee Tables features vibrant, recycled polymer ropes sewn by hand, reflecting the natural rings of the wood
Dutch Design Waste is a sort of meta perspective and explores how everyday waste, in this case Dutch Design Week wristbands, can be transformed into functional design pieces, demonstrating the potential of material reuse. The project Sea-friendly Beach Accessories highlights eco-friendly production for beach gear.
Stucco Tableware redefines tableware design with using clay offcuts. Similarly, (W)aardewerk explores sustainable perspectives and potential futures for ceramics, drawing attention to urgent issues surrounding the extraction of raw materials in relation to the production of ceramics.
These projects champion the future of responsible design, with a focus on durability, material reuse, and eco-conscious production methods. For design enthusiasts, these initiatives offer an inspiring look at how furniture and accessories can be reimagined to fit into a sustainable, circular future.
