MaterialDistrict expo: The Art of Acoustic

The acoustics of a room are dependent on the absorption and the reflection of sound against walls, floor and ceiling, and the size of the room. When the sound is reflected a lot, it takes a while before the sound dies down (echo). As we like low-maintenance, hard, clean floors and smooth ceilings, the acoustics in offices and public spaces have become a problem. It is important to catch sound vibrations and guide them away.

It is possible to make hard materials acoustic by adding (micro)perforations, or by placing a thick wool blanket behind them. Tilting surfaces is a solution often found in concert halls. But you can also add felt to the entire interior to make from a technical problem an artful solution!
