Astral Ascent: A Modular Timber Installation Exploring Geometry and Circular Construction

Located at Bay Area Book City in Shenzhen, Astral Ascent by Zhe Wai Yue Fei Architecture Studio is a site-specific installation that combines traditional timber joinery with contemporary design methods. The project uses wood-based panels and applies mortise-and-tenon principles within a modular system.

The installation examines the relationship between geometry, structural logic and spatial perception. Instead of representing natural forms, it focuses on how structures are assembled. Repetition of star-shaped modules forms the basis of the spatial composition.

Modular System and Self-Supporting Structure

The structure consists of more than 700 star-shaped elements, cut from panels with a visible wood grain. These components are connected through an adapted mortise-and-tenon system, which limits the use of additional fasteners.

Each unit functions as both an individual element and part of the overall structure. Together, they create a self-supporting system. The installation develops vertically, with a gradual transition from dense to more open configurations. This results in a tower-like form with varying degrees of solidity and transparency.

Positive and Negative Space as a Design Driver

The spatial experience is shaped by the relationship between solid elements and the voids between them. The star-shaped modules define both aspects. As visitors move around the installation, these relationships change.

Light also influences the perception of the structure. Sunlight passes through the openings and creates shifting shadows on the ground and surfaces. This introduces a time-based dimension to the spatial composition.

Material Expression and Environmental Integration

The use of timber panels with visible grain and precise cut edges reflects both the material’s natural origin and its processing. The exposed surfaces document the fabrication method while maintaining the material’s texture.

The installation interacts with its surroundings, including sunlight, wind and nearby vegetation. These environmental factors contribute to the overall spatial experience. The combination of renewable materials and a self-supporting system reflects an approach that considers resource use and construction logic.

A Contemporary Timber Application

Astral Ascent presents a modular timber system based on traditional joinery principles. The project illustrates how such systems can be applied in spatial installations, with attention to structure, material use and assembly methods.
