Endless printed house at Material Xperience

News · Story by MaterialDistrict · 19 Nov 2013 · 2 min read

An ‘endless’ 3D printed house is one of the star features of Material Xperience 2014. The Landscape House is a printed villa conceived as an answer to the question: “Can building be like landscape?”

In his presentation, the architect, Janjaap Ruijssenaars, shows exactly how he answers the question. He states that a building certainly can be like a landscape if the building is continuous – without a fixed beginning or an end – in the same way that our planet is.

The international speakers for Material Xperience 2014 are now known. In the weeks leading up to the event, we are publishing profiles on each of the speakers who are sharing their expertise with the audience. To give you a behind the scenes look at who is speaking and why, we’re kicking off with rising star, Janjaap Ruijssenaars of Universe Architecture.

Janjaap Ruijssenaars is a Dutch architect who is cracking the code of innovation. By showing both his own innovations and those of others, he invites the public to take a new look at the world we live in. The secrets behind the success of his office, Universe Architecture, will be explained by showing projects such as Floating Bed, a magnetically levitating bed, and the recently published Tetris apartment, which proposes a new solution for the so-called Dutch ‘rijtjeshuis’ (row house).

As a new construction technique, 3D printing proved to be the most elegant and appropriate in constructing Landscape House. At last year’s event, one of the outright audience favourites was the 3D printing project presented by Enrico Dini. In a way, the talk by Janjaap Ruijssenaars is a continuation of this theme. The presentation will show how a radical idea can be turned from concept into reality. 3D printing demonstrates the process of making in action.

Janjaap graduated from The Western State College of Colorado, Universidad Polytecnica Barcelona, and Delft University of Technology. He is currently a professor at the Royal Academy of Dutch Architects in the Netherlands. His presentation on the Landscape House will be on January 24th 2014.
