Exploring Biobased Creativity with Marvelous Materials
A new educational publication from Aalto University invites young makers to explore the world of biobased materials. Marvelous Materials – Instructions for Bio-Based Experiments introduces simple, hands-on activities that show how natural and recycled ingredients can become creative new materials. Although the book targets 10–15-year-olds, its content also offers inspiration for designers who want to understand sustainable material basics in a clear and playful way.
Developed by the Aalto University Bioinnovation Center and written by Greta Isola, Pirjo Kääriäinen, Tapani Vuorinen, and Susanna Ahola, the guide features 17 experiments. These include creating ceramics from eggshells or shaping hats from seaweed. Each activity uses ingredients that come from nature or from recycled resources. Because of this approach, the book offers an easy introduction to biobased making for beginners of all ages.
A Foundation for Future Designers
The experiments stem from Aalto’s CHEMARTS programme. Here, students combine chemistry, materials science and design to explore new uses for renewable resources. The methods in the book reflect this spirit. They show how simple materials can behave in surprising ways and how designers can learn by testing, mixing and shaping them.
For design professionals, the message is clear. A strong understanding of material origins helps create more responsible products, interiors, fashion items and packaging. The book also shows how early experimentation can support circular thinking. As a result, it encourages future designers to make better choices about resources and waste.
Biobased Making and Sustainability
Many of the activities demonstrate how natural polymers respond to heat, moisture or colour. They also highlight how organic waste can become a valuable ingredient. These ideas appear in many current material innovations, such as algae-based bioplastics, mycelium composites and recycled biobased panels for interiors or packaging. Because the book keeps the process simple, it helps readers recognise the principles behind these advanced materials.
Moreover, the guide promotes curiosity. Designers often discover new material solutions by experimenting first and refining ideas later. The experiments are also suitable for kids, to foster a connection with materials from an early age on. Marvelous Materials supports this mindset and makes sustainable making feel accessible.
