Pleated Paper Waste As A New Design Material
In April 2026, ISSEY MIYAKE’s Milan store presents The Paper Log: Shell and Core, an experimental exhibition that turns industrial paper waste into design objects. Satoshi Kondo of MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO developed the project in collaboration with Spanish architecture practice Ensamble Studio. Together, they explore circular material reuse across fashion, product design, and spatial installation.
From Industrial Byproduct To Design Material
At the centre of the project is the “Paper Log”. This dense, cylindrical roll consists of wafer-thin pleated paper sheets. These sheets serve as a protective layer during the brand’s garment pleating process. Usually, manufacturers discard or recycle them.
However, the team recognised new potential in this byproduct. Each roll measures around 80 cm in height and 40 cm in diameter. Its layered cross-section resembles a tree trunk, with patterns similar to growth rings. As a result, the material subtly reflects time, production, and natural cycles.
Satoshi Kondo first explored this potential by cutting the logs into cross-sections. He used these pieces to create stools, which appeared during the ISSEY MIYAKE Spring/Summer 2025 show in Paris.
Material Experimentation And Design Development
The Paper Log behaves much like timber. Designers can saw, carve, peel, or unroll it. In addition, its absorbent structure allows for further transformation. For instance, treatments such as wax, glue, or hardening agents can significantly alter its properties. Because of this versatility, the material shows promise for interior and product applications. It is especially suitable for lightweight and layered constructions.
To expand the research, ISSEY MIYAKE collaborated with Ensamble Studio. The architecture practice is known for its hands-on approach to materials. Moreover, the studio focuses on minimal intervention, allowing the material itself to guide the outcome.
Shell And Core: Two Material Narratives
The exhibition presents two contrasting approaches: Shell and Core. Ensamble Studio developed the Shell series by peeling thin sheets from the Paper Log. They shaped these sheets freely or wrapped them around existing objects. Afterwards, they applied hardening agents to fix the form. Consequently, the pieces appear delicate yet rigid, preserving every fold and crease.
In contrast, the Core series focuses on mass and density. The ISSEY MIYAKE team created furniture prototypes such as stools, chairs, and tables. They used processes like binding, soaking, and coating to enhance strength and structure.
Circular Design Insights For Creative Industries
Overall, The Paper Log: Shell and Core demonstrates how designers can rethink industrial waste. Instead of discarding byproducts, they can treat them as valuable raw materials. This approach aligns with current developments in circular and sustainable design. The exhibition runs from 21 April to 5 May 2026 at ISSEY MIYAKE / MILAN.
