A more sustainable alternative to fireworks inspired by fireflies

Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde designed an installation of biodegradable light sparks that float through the air as a more sustainable and quieter alternative to fireworks.

Called SPARK, the installation was inspired by the light of fireflies and a desire to update the culturally ingrained ritual of fireworks. Through a combination of design and technology, thousands of bubbles made of biodegradable materials float through the air, lit up by well-aimed lamps. The bubbles look like light sparks floating in the wind, reminiscent of fireworks, but without the noise and air pollution.

The first installation of the project will be in Bilbao’s central park, as a 50 x 30 x 50 metres cloud of SPARK, to “inspire visitors to wonder and reflect on their connection to each other, themselves and nature”. SPARK will be exhibited 1-3 June 2022 in Bilbao-Biscay, Spain, for the Wellbeing Summit for Social Change.
