Extra Ordinary: Discarded Materials Find Inspiring Second LIfe

Extra Ordinary is a new show at London’s Aram Gallery that is showcasing designers who are giving discarded materials an inspiring second life.

The exhibit features works such as Jorge Penadés tables of compressed scrap leather dubbed Structural Skin as well as Lex Pott’s rings made by drilling through 10 and 20 cent Euro coins.

Additionally, carboard takes on the appearance of a wooden log with Luisa Kahlfeldt’s collection of 3 seats, bowls by Krupka-Stighan Studio are made with cotton yarn remnants, Martijn Rigters is featuring a polystyrene couch made with a hot-wire cutter and Ying Chang moulds bubble wrap into a collection of vases for the ‘neolastic’ collection.

Riya Patel, curator of the exhibit says, “The designers selected for the exhibition show incredible resourceful imagination and daring. They find new ways of seeing what surrounds them.” She continues that new perspectives on materials such as this are the key to innovation. Pyrex cookwear for example was adapted to glass used for railroad lanterns and before Coke was a top-selling beverage, it is was used as a remedy for morphine addition.

They show is on display in London until August 22nd and admission is free.
