Material Xperience 2014 review

Material Xperience 2014 The Netherlands was held last week in Rotterdam. The show, featuring Materia partners, materials’ innovation and a seminar programme, was a success, with many visitors declaring they had found new, interesting and useful materials, information and contacts at the show.

Commercial partners brought clever innovations to Material Xperience. At the entrance to the hall, Barrisol had a lightweight panelling solution for stretched interiors which delivers high-end results.

Desso shared its already popular air-master carpet. The flooring panels clean air while having the further advantage of an almost invisible tiling seam, so the panels look like one wall-to-wall spread. Meanwhile newcomer Plafondverbeelding demonstrated an advanced interior lighting system that simulates daylight conditions.

The combination of architects BiermanHenket and ceramics producers Tichelaar were put in the spotlights on the second day. The team won the 2014 Co-Creation Award for their collaboration on a Dutch museum extension using specially formed ceramic tiles to create a fascinating shape.

One of the most popular parts of Material Xperience is always the independent materials’ collection. The selection here, curated by Materia’s editors, presented a diverse look at materials within the theme of ‘The Smart Environment’. From high-tech interactive materials in the Smart Lab section to clever biomimicry in Smart Nature, the samples at hand were seen, touched and discussed by many at the event.

There were also some very special items on show. Doris Sung’s bi-metal ‘breathing’ façade, joined Newspaperwood, ultra-thin stone veneer and even mushroom leather in the Materia exhibition during Material Xperience.

We will have some of the presentations by the many visiting speakers online for you soon. Please note we can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to publish them all.

A huge thank you goes out to all exhibitors, visitors and speakers who took part. We will have updates and in-depth reviews of the seminars online shortly. For now, check out the buzz on Twitter and have a look at the pictures on Facebook.

Next year’s edition of Material Xperience will be held in Utrecht from 9th to 13th February 2015.
