Eelgrass Acoustic Baffles Shape Copenhagen Listening Lounge
Danish loudspeaker manufacturer Dynaudio has opened a new listening lounge in central Copenhagen. The interior features suspended acoustic baffles made from eelgrass. Norm Architects designed the space for A Moving Presence, an exhibition created with Japanese furniture manufacturer Karimoku. The lounge opened during 3daysofdesign 2026.
The designers aimed to bring sound, space and materials together in one setting. They also explored how materials can influence the mood of an interior and the way visitors experience sound.
Biobased Acoustic Elements
Søuld Acoustic Mats FR hang from the ceiling in a rhythmic pattern. The soft eelgrass elements absorb sound and help create a balanced listening environment. At the same time, their arrangement adds visual depth to the ceiling.
Eelgrass gives the panels a natural texture and warm colour. These features soften the technical character of the audio equipment. They also add a tactile contrast to the clean lines of the loudspeakers. Together, the acoustic baffles create a calm, enclosed setting. This atmosphere invites visitors to slow down and listen more closely.
The project shows how architects and interior designers can use natural acoustic materials as visible design features. Here, the eelgrass panels combine acoustic performance with a strong visual identity. Rather than hiding the sound treatment, Norm Architects made it part of the interior.
Combining Nature And Technology
Dynaudio’s sound systems and Søuld’s acoustic panels each play a clear role in the lounge. The technology delivers high-quality sound, while the eelgrass baffles improve comfort and shape the atmosphere.
This combination shows how natural materials and advanced technology can support each other. The project also offers an alternative approach to standard acoustic interiors. It treats sound control as part of the overall design instead of a later technical addition.
